Should the MAV be removed from competitive play?

Please note that based on our ruleset, we have already proven that we prefer the barebones feel. Our guidelines for removing certain aspects of the game are only necessary if we feel they actually “break the game”. The MAV, for the reason shown below, we feel is a good indication that it breaks the game we all know, love, and prefer. We still want to hear what the community feels about it before making a quick decision.

There has been some discussion with recent modifications to MAV’s in Battlefield 3. Particularly in Squad Rush, in case you were unaware, MAV’s can be placed in strategic locations that provides consistent UAV to see where your enemies are located anytime they move. Generally the locations they are placed in makes it difficult on the attacking team to kill the MAV. How does the community feel about removing the MAV from both 8v8 and 4v4 in order to bring strategies back to placing people in strategic locations and not knowing what your opponent is doing or where they are coming from?

Please post a comment indicating what your preference is. We would like to hear from those teams playing in the Battlefield 3 community.

Its a good tool to use and isn’t really op, but it should have a few rules to regulate its use. A lot of nerd teams (you know who you are) figure out ways to exploit with it and that needs to have rules against it but I do not think it should be removed
    completely.

  2. CGL

My concern is that there are going to consistently be ways that it can be exploited and we’ll spend way too much time trying to decipher if a team was within the guidelines of use or not. What do you think, is there a blanket rule that would only allow for proper or good use of the MAV, shamE?

  3. Removing something like the MAV could be devastating to certain teams. Its become almost a must have in 4v4. I know personally that almost every good team I play against uses a MAV.

Its quite the decision… My opinion is that its a great tool, pretty OP, kinda gay when its exploited in spots you cant reach, but I wouldn’t mind for it to get banned. I don’t mind either way really…. But you gotta understand if the MAV is banned, most teams will almost guarantee run 4 assault, and that just means more noob tube (M320) spam.

Its fine, dont remove it. Just like commander, if you can communicate effectively with your team its great. Sure you can leave it somewhere where it cannot be reached but I think there is already a rule against that.

Focusing more on the Squad rush ruleset, the USAS 12 needs to be banned. Since the last patch the trigger speed is op. In squad rush everything is so close quarter and it is impossible to win a one on one with someone spamming this gun no matter how fast you react.

  5. I really don’t know, it helps some teams, if anything remove the M320′s… Not smoke, just grenade.

  6. I would rather see the M320s removed before MAVs were removed. BF2 had a great competitive run with commander mode which was essentially the uber-MAV.

  7. Every good team uses it because it’s OP. Wait, are wallhacks not considered hacks? You get what i mean.

M320′s should me removed too. Sorry shamE, back to 1.0kdr for you.

Just speaking personally, I feel like there is a little bit of a difference between the commander in BF2 and the MAV in BF3. The commander in BF2 was meant to be a director of the battlefield. I feel like it was a pretty poor addition to competition personally, but besides that, the MAV I don’t believe was developed with that intention in mind. I think with it being attached to the Recon class they felt like they needed to buff the class a little bit in order to make it a more viable option overall. What they failed to take note of is how it could be used (abused?) in competitive play.

I personally feel though that it is an all or nothing rule. I don’t feel like we can place a good rule on it where it is used properly in matches without having to review every single match and making a personal judgement call (which is difficult anyway given the battlerecorder status).

My personal gut feeling is that the MAV should be removed from competitive play, but it seems like several teams favor leaving it in. The CGL will obviously side on the majority and we won’t make a quick decision on this until I get more feedback. I appreciate those that have responded so far though and I’m reading every single response carefully. At this point, if we go into matches next week without an official decision, as of right now the MAV’s are allowed.

There is a difference between commander and MAV.. I can go recon and place the MAV somewhere and forget about it and go kill people with my radar ESP. The commander had to stay back and wasnt really in the battle other than drops and mortars and stuff right? The commander also had to call out where people were right? The MAV pretty much gives your whole team wall hacks, so there is pretty much no use in trying to switch up a defense or offense strat because they will already know what you are gonna do before you get there (due to gay MAV).

  10. I think you should just ban putting the MAV in any area which is unreachable. It is the recon’s responsibility that if they drop control of the mav, it better not fall to an unreachable area or face losing that round. If it’s too hard to check whether the enemy is exploiting MAV in an out of reach position and prove it than I say ban the MAV.

The MAV and the TUGS do the same thing but you have to actually place the TUGS down. I’d prefer that we just ban putting the MAV in locations that are inaccessible by foot, and as blazn said, if that’s too hard to police, just ban the MAV. TUGS does the same thing and doesn’t have the same exploit-ability.

The MAV is a great tool. The way the game is designed, you cannot help but there be certain spots for it that are out of our control. It is easily countered by an Enemy MAV, Stingers, or even just simply shooting at it.

I do have to agree with di5posal, the MAV getting banned means the 4th guy that used to play recon will more than likely be running another assault class. I would like to see a 2 medic rule.

    But my vote, keep mav.

The MAV is essentially the same thing as commander. The commander in BF2 can deploy a UAV where ever, and spot where ever and the UAV could not be destroyed, similar to the feeling of the MAV being in exploited unreachable areas. Without the commander or MAV in infantry only competition, what is going to be the difference between BF3 and COD? The whole point of BF3 is that it is a more tactical and realistic shooter compared to COD, where it just feeling like a more intense arcade game.

The MAV is in my opinion better then it was in BF2 because you can destroy the MAV (if you can find it) and that person cannot call artillery or spot through the map like in BF2.

  14. di5posal

I change my vote. BAN THE GOD DAMN MAV!

  15. zNode

Absolutley ban the MAV for 4v4 gameplay.
I’m sure it will be nerfed in a future update otherwise.

  16. Very interesting information!Perfect just what I was looking for!

ban the mav NOW!!! I hate people who say just work around them, dodging them works but only if you see them coming I have been killed numerous times just out of the blue it’s retarded. also just because it’s can be hard to kill someone with the mav does’t mean you should be doing it. I mean come on this is a war game it’s meant to be played with rifles and tanks and not what amounts to a flying toaster.
